Carmen Vera left her 10-year union job to pursue her true passion: restoring classic cars. And her story starts on OfferUp with a 1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass and a vision for what it could become. 

A lifelong classic car enthusiast, Carmen grew up watching her father and cousins work on their vehicles before eventually beginning to tinker with them herself. In 2021, determined to find an Oldsmobile of her own, she turned to OfferUp. That’s where she found a local listing for a 1979 Cutlass for $4,000.

The moment she saw it, she had a vision for her dream car — and she wanted it pink. She called the owner and quickly made arrangements to bring it home. “Within ten minutes, she was mine, and I brought her home. This is where my story begins.”

More than a purchase — a story passed down:

Because she bought the car secondhand, Carmen also inherited its story. It had lived an entire life before her — originally a surprise gift from a husband to his wife in 1979, later set aside after he passed.

Knowing that history made the car feel like more than just a project. It deepened Carmen’s connection not only to the vehicle, but to the family behind it. When she shared her plans for the restoration, the owner’s son had one request: “Whatever you do with this vehicle, please send me pictures.”

The full-circle moment

Over the course of seven months, Carmen and her business partner completed a full restoration—new paint, bumpers, wheels, interiors, every detail reimagined. When it was finally complete, a gleaming vision of pink, Carmen invited the original owners to see it at the LA Auto Trade Center. Seeing their speechless reaction, Carmen felt the moment come full circle. In that instant, she knew she had found her true calling.

Carmen has since built her own restoration business, with customers stretching from the West Coast, as far as Hawaii, to Texas. In fact, this is one of four businesses she owns.

For Carmen, restoring classics is more than just mechanics. Each car carries a story—memories, history, a family behind it. Five years after that first pivotal purchase on OfferUp, she has turned her passion into a full-time business, and her greatest joy is the legacy she is building for herself and her children.
