OfferUp Recommerce Report 2024

This week, we released our 2024 Recommerce Report, and there’s some fascinating stuff in here. We surveyed 1,500 U.S. adults to get a feel for how people are approaching recommerce, and it turns out 35% of shoppers tried resale for the first time this year—an 8% bump from last year. It’s no surprise, though—72% of folks say the stigma around secondhand shopping is fading, and 63% even admire those who choose secondhand over brand new.

With this kind of momentum, the recommerce market is projected to hit a whopping $291.6B by 2029, making up 8% of the total retail market. And it’s not just about saving money—people are really getting into it. 53% of shoppers now see resale as a fun hobby, and 58% say it’s even more enjoyable than buying new. Plus, 55% say they’re finding unique, must-have items they couldn’t track down (or afford) anywhere else. The thrill of the hunt is real!

Other notable findings from our 2024 Recommerce Report reveal:

  • Secondhand shopping is more than just a good deal—it’s all about the feels! 66% of shoppers say it brings satisfaction, 61% feel the excitement, and 50% experience pure joy.

  • Compliments are rolling in too—76% of shoppers have been praised for their secondhand finds.

  • The stigma? It’s fading fast. 72% believe secondhand is more accepted, with 63% admiring those who choose pre-loved over new. This shift is fueled by changing attitudes toward waste and consumption, according to 61% of shoppers.

  • And the mindset is evolving—53% think we should prioritize pre-owned items, and 38% say resale is downright trendy.

  • Resale isn't just for decluttering—63% love meeting in person for transactions, and 51% have made new friends or meaningful connections in the process.

  • Money talks too—74% of sellers use resale platforms for extra cash, and 60% are using that income to cover bills or everyday expenses.
