OfferUp Recommerce Report 2025

This week, we released our 2025 Recommerce Report, which highlights a positive outlook for the secondhand market in the years ahead. In a survey of 1,500 U.S. adults, we found that recommerce has truly entered the mainstream, with 93% of Americans having purchased secondhand in 2025. With so many people turning to resale, it’s no surprise that the market is on track to reach $306.5 billion by 2030.

Economic factors like inflation and tariffs are prompting 79% of Americans to explore secondhand as a way to save. At the same time, people are finding added value in supporting their local communities, with secondhand purchases helping to fuel local economies.

Other notable findings from our 2025 Recommerce Report reveal:

  • The secondhand market goes far beyond apparel — which makes up just 25% of the $200B+ multi-category U.S. recommerce economy.

  • Thrifting is cool? Increasingly so. In fact, 70% of Americans say the stigma around secondhand shopping has faded.

  • Local resale remains core to the experience, with 59% of shoppers saying they enjoy buying and selling with people in their own community.

  • Gen Z is not only embracing this shift, but driving it, with 49% selling an item for the first time and 75% saying they enjoy meeting in person to complete transactions.

  • Additionally, more than half (54%) of Gen Z say they choose secondhand most of the time when a suitable option is available, outpacing Millennials (44%) and signaling a shift toward more intentional and sustainable shopping habits.

  • Resale is also delivering real earnings for this generation. One in three Gen Z sellers (33%) report earning between $301 and $500 from secondhand sales, making it a meaningful source of income for many younger adults.
